In Remembrance of Irvine “Buck” Welling (1918 – 2010) Shareholder, Humanitarian and Friend

The shareholders of Elliott Davis, LLC are deeply saddened by the passing of longtime shareholder Irvine “Buck” Welling on October 5, 2010.

We are honored to have worked alongside such an amazing visionary, mentor and friend. For 61 years, Mr. Welling played a pivotal role in the shaping our firm; guiding it through challenging times; and capitalizing on key opportunities.

In 1959, Mr. Welling and three colleagues assumed ownership of Elliott Davis, located in Greenville, S.C. They soon opened an office in Greenwood, S.C., and as the Southeast grew in the remaining decades of the 20th century so did Elliott Davis, fastidiously led by Mr. Welling.

It was in these early years that the firm’s core values took shape: exceeding client expectations; developing our people; leading in our communities; and living the highest standard of integrity.

It is without question that Mr. Welling lived these values wholeheartedly. Even until the time of his death, Mr. Welling was frequently engaged in firm activities, both client work and internal orientations for our people. His giving of his time and energy to a firm to which he already had given so much was admirable to all of us.

In the community, Mr. Welling’s work was extensive and impacting. A close advisor to industrialist John D. Hollingsworth, he was instrumental in the establishment of The Hollingsworth Funds, a charitable support organization, becoming its first chairman and serving until his retirement this year.

Well-respected throughout the Greenville community, Furman University recently awarded Mr. Welling an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree and the Boy Scouts of America recognized him with a 2009 Distinguished Citizen Award. In November, he will be among the honorees at a March of Dimes event in the city. His strongly rooted community commitment always has set an example for our firm and our people.

During this difficult time, we would like to extend our sympathies to Mr. Welling’s family. We also would like to express our sincere gratitude for having the great pleasure of knowing such a dynamic and remarkable colleague and friend.
